The best doner kebab in the 10 largest cities in Germany

Who doesn’t love it, the doner kebab? But where are the best kebabs in the largest cities in Germany? We clarify!

Whether in flatbread, as a Dürüm or with fries and rice on a plate – such a kebab always tastes good. We’ve been looking for the best kebab shops in the 10 largest cities in Germany for you!

1. Berlin: Mustafas

Berlin’s best kebab can be found just outside the Mehringdamm U-Bahn station, more precisely at Mehringdamm 32, by the laundromat – as explicitly mentioned on the Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebab website. Since 2006, owner Tarik Kara and his family have been running the small snack bar, where even Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey ate during a tour of Berlin. As you can guess, depending on the level of popularity, the waiting times can be longer – but don’t worry, it’s definitely worth it! In addition to chicken and vegetable kebabs and Dürüm, you will also find French fries, “Plus” fries and a salad bowl on offer. For a cheap 5.40 euros you have the opportunity to enjoy Berlin’s best doner kebab.

2. Hamburg: Mr. Kebab

No ordinary kebab shop awaits you in the hip part of town between the Schanzenviertel and the Kiez. The restaurant is much more reminiscent of a trendy hipster bar with a casual flair and extraordinary food – and that’s exactly what you’ll find at Mr. Kebab. Open daily from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Bei Grünen Jäger 1 in Hamburg offers you a variety of delicious dishes. Whether lentil soup, dürüm, falafel, sigara böregi or meze with raki (an alcoholic Turkish national drink) – here you will find the right kebab for every taste.

3. Munich: Türkitch Kofte & Kebab

We also have the right address(es) in Munich to make your kebab fan heart beat faster: Founded in 2014 by shop owner Hayri Onbasi, Türkitch Köfte and Kebab are now available at three different locations: Humboldstraße 20 in Untergiesing, Türkenstraße 21 in Maxvorstadt and since May 10, 2019, queues for Berlin’s best kebab have also been forming at Bahnhofsplatz in Schützenstraße 1. According to Onbasi, the recipe for success consists mainly of “lots of love” and an unbeatable team that simply fits together. Unlike in many conventional kebab shops, you will not only find kebabs and kebabs on Türkitch’s menu, but also countless other Turkish specialties.

4. Cologne: Mangal doner kebab

Who would have thought that football and doner kebab could combine into something so unique? Lukas Podolski, one of the most popular soccer players in the world, opened together with the brothers Salih and Metin Dag Cologne’s now most popular kebab shop and relies on freshly baked bread, ingredients of the highest quality and a certain flair in the restaurant itself.

With his easy-going manner and love of Turkish tradition, Podolski succeeds in breathing something new into the well-known and thus serving a variety of Turkish national dishes with new tricks. You can convince yourself of this at four different locations – and with a bit of luck you might even meet Podolski himself and get an autograph. If not, at least you have an excellent doner kebab.

5. Frankfurt am Main: Dornbusch Kebap House

In a small, inconspicuous shop at Eschersheimer Landstraße 226 you will find the Dornbusch Kebap House in the company of extremely friendly employees. The shop itself is not too big, but the portions are all the bigger. For a reasonable 4.50 euros – and thus in the lower price segment compared to other stands – you can bite into Frankfurt’s best doner kebab with lots of meat, sauce and crusty bread.

6. Stuttgart: Alaturka

The Alaturka at Olgastrasse 75 already has a long history behind it: in 1979, Yüksel Dogan, a guest worker at the time and now the owner of the shop, came to Germany and opened a vegetable shop with his wife at the time. At first, doner kebabs were only sold in a small area . Fate struck in 2001: his wife suffered a herniated disc and the family had to rethink. This is how the Alaturka was born, which the people of Stuttgart all know and love today and which is still managed by Mr. Dogan and his daughter. The meat skewer, weighing 50 kilograms, is layered daily and only regional ingredients are used in the doner kebab – and you can taste it. Therefore, the price of 6.50 euros for the standard doner kebab is more expensive than elsewhere in Stuttgart, but worth every penny.

7. Dusseldorf: My Vegetable Döner

“Once eaten – never forgotten” is the motto at Friedrichstraße 144, Düsseldorf – and the owners of My Gemüse Döner are right about that. In the small but fine kebab shop, guests bustle about and queue up outside the shop to enjoy one of the delicious kebab variations. If the extensive Turkish dishes are not enough for you, you can treat yourself to one of the delicious waffles afterwards and chat with the always cheerful employees.

8. Leipzig: Olive Tree

You’re probably also wondering why Olive Tree is on this list, given that the restaurant mainly advertises its pizzas. Treated as a real insider tip, you will still find the best kebab in town at Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 38. The extraordinary thing about it, compared to the other doner kebabs on this list, is not necessarily the excellent quality of the ingredients (even if that also applies here, of course!), but the many different and exotic sauces – from the classic herb sauce to sesame sauce and fruity ones mango sauce. In addition, there is the fast service, which perfects the visit to the Olive Tree. Another plus point: The restaurant is open daily until the early hours of the morning and is therefore also suitable for the hungry night owls among you.

9. Dortmund: K. Maras Grill

Although the restaurant K. Maras Grill looks more like a burger shop, you will find the best kebab in the city here in the middle of Dortmund at Bergstraße 63. The business has been run by the Yilmaz family for over 20 years and is extremely popular with both locals and tourists due to its family flair. As more and more kebab shops are now doing, the skewer itself is layered here too and quality clearly comes first. Veal or turkey, Dürüm or kebab, Turkish pizza or rather kebab on a plate – you are spoiled for choice, because everything is delicious here.

10. Essen: Orkide doner kebab

Last but not least, we would like to introduce you to the best doner kebab in Essen. Located at Klarastraße 1, Orkide Döner Kebap delivers a decent meal for around 5.50 euros, which is a pleasure to the last bite. As standard, instead of salad, there are grilled vegetables in the doner kebab, but you can also design your perfect doner kebab yourself if you wish. If you feel like something different, the Orkide also offers lahmacun, köfte or various salads. The modern shop itself invites you to linger and enjoy your food between beautifully tended orchids.
