Tesla is working on futuristic looking robot taxi
According to company boss Elon Musk, Tesla is developing a self-driving and futuristic-looking taxi. It is not planned for a person to be able to take control of the vehicle.
The electric car manufacturer Tesla wants to build a “special” self-driving taxi that will “look futuristic”, as Elon Musk announced at the presentation of his company’s quarterly figures. Accordingly, the Robotaxi should be completely self-propelled and have no steering wheel or pedals.
The Tesla boss had missed his predictions of full autonomy several times. In 2019, Musk said human-driven robotic taxis would be available in some US markets in 2020.
Fully autonomous driving later this year
Earlier this year, the tech billionaire said he would be “shocked” if Tesla didn’t achieve fully autonomous driving, safer than humans, this year.
Tesla is more specific when it comes to the production of the Cybertruck presented in 2019 and the humanoid robot “Optimus”. Manufacturing of both products is scheduled to begin next year.
The Tesla Bot, launched last summer, is the most important product his company is working on, according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk. It could even become more important than the vehicle business, said the Tesla boss in January.
Robots for transport tasks
Musk wants to use the robot in his own factories first. There he can transport parts or take on other tasks. “If we can’t find a use for it, we shouldn’t expect others to do it,” Musk said.
With its futuristic-looking Cybertruck electric pickup, Tesla wants to penetrate the core business of American car companies. The vehicle has an unusual triangular shape, more reminiscent of an angular stealth fighter jet than a classic pickup truck.
