Marmaris Castle and Marmaris Museum
Marmaris Castle, which is the symbol of Marmaris and one of the historical places worth seeing, was built during the Ionian period (1044 BC).
The castle, which was renovated and expanded during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, was heavily damaged in the First World War. The castle consists of 18 rooms, a fountain and an arc. The last restoration of the castle was carried out between 1980-1990 and it was turned into a museum in 1991.
The castle has different indoor areas organized as Archeology Hall and Ethnography Hall. Other areas are also used as art gallery and warehouse.
In the archeology section of the Marmaris Museum, pieces from different historical periods (Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine) and pottery and glassware, coins and ornaments found in the excavations in the region are exhibited.
In the ethnography section, there are items belonging to the Ottoman period. Marmaris Museum is open to visitors every day of the week between 08.30-12.00 and 13.00-17.00 on Mondays.
